20 minutes from the cabin · an hour for the visit · all year round
Voroneț Monastery was built by Stephen the Great in 1488, in just a few months, as tradition has it, and its walls were painted on the outside a few decades later. It is the best known of the painted churches of Bucovina, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the place where a colour was born: Voroneț blue. An unhurried visit takes about an hour.

A colour no one has managed to copy
Everyone who has been to Voroneț talks about the blue first. It is not the blue of the sky or of the sea, but a deeper, more mysterious one, with a light that seems to come from inside the wall. It has come through almost five centuries of rain, snow and mountain winds and is still there on the walls, as vivid as if it had been painted yesterday.
Exactly what it is made of is still debated by specialists. For you, something else matters: seeing it in the morning light, when the sun falls slantwise on the wall and the colour takes on a depth that is hard to describe.
What you see on the walls
“The Last Judgement”, on the west wall, is the best-known fresco in Bucovina: hundreds of figures, angels, saints and sinners, arranged in rows from top to bottom. It reads like an open book, slowly, and every time you discover something new.
On the south wall you can admire “The Tree of Jesse” alongside other religious scenes and depictions of saints. The wall is beautifully lit in the morning, which is also when you can take the best photos.
Inside lies the tomb of Daniil Sihastrul, the confessor of Stephen the Great. Tradition has it that the monastery was built on his advice.
When it is at its most beautiful
Early in the morning, before the coaches arrive, or late in the afternoon, when the courtyard empties and the shadows grow longer. In summer, between ten and two, it gets crowded.
In winter, Voroneț becomes a different place. The snow makes the blue even brighter, the courtyard is almost empty, and the silence is so deep that you can hear the snow creaking underfoot. If you come only once in your life, come in winter.

How to get there from the cabin
Twenty minutes. Drive down from Stulpicani towards Frasin, then along the DN17 towards Gura Humorului, and on the edge of town turn up towards Voroneț. The car park is a few hundred metres from the monastery, and the walk to the gate takes you past stalls selling painted eggs, wooden spoons and sheepskin coats.
You can set off after your first coffee and be back by lunchtime, with the whole afternoon free for the hot tub.
You will find the opening hours and the entrance fee on the monastery’s website. The fee is usually payable in cash only, so bring small change: many visitors give up on going in because they only have a card.
What else to see the same day
Humor Monastery is a quarter of an hour away and is Voroneț’s quieter sister: smaller, less well known, with a tower from which you can see the whole village. Together they make a perfect morning. If you feel like a longer drive, Moldovița and Sucevița are waiting over the hills, but it is best to keep a whole day for them.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a visit to Voroneț Monastery take?
Between three quarters of an hour and an hour, including a walk around the outside of the church, where the finest paintings are.
Can you take photos?
Photography rules can differ from one church to another. Follow the signs at the entrance and ask before taking photos inside. Modest dress is expected.
Is it worth it with children?
Yes, if you treat it like a story. “The Last Judgement” is full of characters, and children read it like a picture book. For a family day, two monasteries are enough. Leave time for the drive, for play and for unplanned stops.
Where can we stay near Voroneț?
Twenty minutes away, in Stulpicani, there is a cabin you rent as a whole, with an outdoor hot tub and the forest all around the house. We wrote this guide from there.
