under an hour from the cabin · 2 hours · all year round, especially on rainy days
You visit Cacica Salt Mine by going down a few dozen metres underground, on a wooden staircase built in the Austrian period, at the end of the 18th century. Down below you will find a chapel carved into the salt, a ballroom and a small underground lake, and the temperature stays at around 14 degrees all year round. From the cabin it takes less than an hour to get there.

What you see as you go down
The wooden staircase, with its 192 steps, takes you gradually underground, into a world carved out of salt. The descent is part of the experience, while on the way back the 192 steps can test your stamina, especially for people with reduced mobility. Take it at your own pace and stop for a rest whenever you need to.
The Chapel of Saint Barbara, carved into the salt, with an iconostasis and steps cut right into the wall, is where every visitor stops, without noticing that they have started to speak in whispers.
The ballroom once hosted parties, and boats once carried loads across the lake. The air is clean, the silence is complete, and children can explore safely.

Who it suits
Rainy days, families with children and anyone coming to Bucovina for the second time who has already seen the monasteries. It is one of those places that is just as beautiful in any season: you can visit it in the middle of summer just as well as on a November day.
Bring a warm jacket, even in summer: 14 degrees underground feels different from 14 degrees outside.
What to combine it with on the same day
Cacica Salt Mine fits well into a day exploring the Gura Humorului area. You can combine the visit with Humor Monastery or a stroll around Gura Humorului, depending on how much time you have.
