Transrarău and Pietrele Doamnei: a day at the top of Bucovina

45 minutes from the cabin · a full day · May to October for the whole road

The Transrarău is the mountain road that climbs from Câmpulung Moldovenesc towards the Rarău massif, and Pietrele Doamnei are the limestone rocks you can see from miles away, like the towers of a fortress above the forest. From the cabin you reach the top in about 45 minutes, and the path to the rocks takes under an hour there and back. It is the most spectacular day trip in the area. Times are approximate and can vary with access conditions and the weather.

The road that climbs through the clouds

From Stulpicani, drive through Slătioara on the DJ177B towards Câmpulung Moldovenesc. The climb begins in Câmpulung: a tarmacked road with tight hairpin bends and views that will make you stop more than once, just to look back. The road is narrow in places, so take it slowly; the drive is half the fun anyway.

At the top there is a car park next to the mountain hut, where the trail starts.

In winter and early spring the road may be closed because of snow. Ask us before you set off and we will tell you what we know about the road.

On foot, up to the rocks

From the car park to Pietrele Doamnei, the trail takes about 20-30 minutes along a marked path, with rocky stretches and changes in height. With children, adjust your pace and decide based on how used they are to mountain paths. Wear hiking shoes with a good grip, especially if the path is wet.

The limestone rocks rise as high as an eight-storey building, and at the top the wind and the quiet make you forget everything you left at home. Legend has it that the wife of Prince Petru Rareș hid here with her treasures in times of invasion. That is where the name comes from: Pietrele Doamnei means “the Lady’s Rocks”.

If you want to explore more of the Rarău massif, there are also trails towards Piatra Șoimului and Slătioara. These are longer hikes, for which you need to set aside more time and have proper mountain gear.

What to bring

Water, something to eat, a windproof jacket even in August and shoes with a good sole. At the top it is a few degrees colder than in the valley, and the weather changes quickly.

The phone signal is weak in places, so download the map before you set off.
